Taking Calcium Supplements

While it is pretty much common knowledge that calcium supplements are essential to strong bones and preventing osteoporosis, many people are unaware of how important calcium supplements can be to controlling healthy blood pressure and maintaining regular rhythmic heart beat. Without proper calcium supplementation, the body has been shown to “withdraw” from the calcium supply deposited in your bones, in order to utilize the calcium for maintaining proper cardiovascular function. The result of this is what leads to the weakening of one’s skeletal integrity.

The recommended amount for your daily calcium supplement is approximately 1,000 milligrams. But, if you are over fifty years in age, your daily recommended calcium supplement should be raised to at least 1,200 milligrams. It is important to remember to not allow your daily amount of calcium in your diet PLUS the daily amount of your calcium supplement to exceed 2,500 milligrams per day. If this occurs when taking Calcium supplements, it increases your risk of kidney stone and high blood pressure levels.

It is also good to keep in mind when taking Calcium supplements that you are also taking Vitamin D, as this vitamin is essential in the absorption of calcium into the body. Many calcium supplements also contain Vitamin D. You can also get Vitamin D from natural exposure to the sun. But given how difficult the latter may be on a daily basis, it is advised that you take at least 1,000 milligrams of Vitamin D daily.

Another important addition to your calcium supplements is the mineral Magnesium. Magnesium will help prevent constipation and aid in proper absorption in individuals who are older or frail due to sickness or chemotherapy. If you are also taking an Iron supplement or antibiotic, such as tetracycline, it is important to do so at least two hours before taking your calcium supplement in order to proper absorption of both supplements.
